CLOUD COMPUTING JOBS FAQs
Yes, there is a huge demand for cloud skills. The need for experienced cloud professionals has soared following the shift to remote and hybrid working, taking the focus away from in-house servers.
Migration experience with the three major players – AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure – is a safe bet for securing a new job, as well as having experience in related areas such as cyber security, DevOps and database and programming language skills.
Cloud computing salaries usually starts from around €35,000 for more junior roles, but this is dependent on location. As a cloud engineer in Dublin, you would be looking at a typical salary of €85,000, or as a cloud architect, up to €15,0000 per annum.
As a contractor specialising in cloud computing, you can expect €400-€750 per day, depending on your seniority, location, and the specifics of the project.
Despite the relative security of the cloud in comparison to physical servers, cyber security experience is useful, as organisations look to mitigate risk to new operating models. A CCSP certification can help if you’re interested in specialising in this area.
Database and programming language skills will also give you an edge. As the storage and management of cloud data continues to be a priority, database language skills such as SQL, MySQL and Hadoop will be critical. If you’re on the ERP side, you should look at improving your knowledge of Java, Python, .NET and Ruby.
Finally, those with strong DevOps engineering skills are in high demand, supporting businesses in the effective and efficient release of products and software. It’s important to have an in-depth and provable understanding of developer and testing practices, and you should also be able to work in a team in a collaborative, agile way.
Machine learning and AI will have a big part to play in the future of cloud computing. The top cloud platforms – namely, Azure, AWS and Google Cloud – are all investing heavily in these technologies, combining to create the ‘intelligent cloud’. Intelligent cloud solves difficult problems and optimises the use of data science.
Additionally, the use of containerisation tools – such as Kubernetes – can accommodate software packages that are portable, and able to run uniformly across any cloud platform.
