Most professionals who enter actuarial work are graduates – usually those with degrees in economics, maths, finance, business and in some cases science or engineering. Furthermore, employers will generally choose candidates with a first or second-class honours classification, although work experience will also be a consideration.

To work as an actuary, it is crucial to have a strong command of numeracy and analytics. This will ideally be supported by practical IT skills and the ability to verbally communicate complex concepts. You’ll also be expected to write clear and concise reports, so a good level of writing competency will be helpful.

Ideally, you will also be driven and independent, with a strong desire to learn new skills and explore business opportunities.
