Pipeline Protection Engineer role with Semi-State Utilities Company

Your new company

Hays has been retained to recruit a Pipeline Protection Engineer for our client, who is a Semi-State Utilities Company with bases throughout Ireland.


Your new role

Reporting to the Senior Pipeline Safety Engineer, the Pipeline Protection Engineer will:

  • Develop and manage interfaces with key stakeholders such as Local Authorities, National Roads Authority, Railway Procurement Agency, Fire Services, and Electrical Infrastructure operators.
  • Liaise with third parties regarding development near Transmission Pipelines or Distribution Strategic Mains, including:

  • Local Authorities
  • Architects, Engineers, and Planning Consultants
  • Property Developers
  • Electrical Infrastructure developers and operators
  • Landowners and Farmers
  • Contractors and Utilities

  • Approve and issue maps, drawings, and relevant codes of practice using technologies such as GIS and DBYD online.
  • Maintain a database documenting all third-party activity near pipelines.
  • Prepare and issue monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for internal use and regulatory reporting.
  • Assess development proposals and participate in forums to evaluate their impact on pipeline safety.
  • Initiate pipe protection measures and supervise construction where necessary.
  • Advise third parties on appropriate procedures during development.
  • Participate in safety campaigns and stakeholder information sessions.
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures for third-party liaison and development near pipelines.
  • Coordinate with Agricultural Liaison Officers and the Distribution DBYD team to ensure consistency.
  • Work with inspectors and operations teams to track and resolve queries.
  • Provide updates and escalate risks or issues to the Senior Pipeline Safety Engineer.
  • Lead improvement initiatives for tracking and managing third-party development enquiries.


What you'll need to succeed

  • Degree in Engineering or equivalent.
  • 3–5 years of relevant engineering experience, ideally with knowledge of Transmission and/or Distribution natural gas processes and construction techniques.
  • Understanding of safety management and risk assessment principles.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships and gain commitment.
  • Excellent communication skills across all mediums.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective information-gathering procedures.
  • Proactive approach to learning and applying new knowledge.
  • High personal performance standards and results-driven mindset.
  • Good understanding of business operations and the commercial impact of technical decisions.
  • Proven ability to manage complex issues and communicate them effectively.

What you'll get in return

  • Salary €50k to €60k + package
