The Role
The Asset Operations function underpins service delivery, environmental protection, regulatory compliance and operational expenditure. It oversees operational and maintenance strategy, policies, planning and standard operating procedures for water and wastewater services nationally and regionally.
The Water O&M Management function delivers national water operations through the operation, inspection, maintenance and repair of water treatment and network assets.
The Leakage Detection sub‑area focusses on identifying leakage across the water network, supported by analysis, conservation and planning teams. Repairs are carried out by network maintenance teams and contractors where required.
Reporting to the Leakage Detection Team Lead, the Leakage Detection Operative monitors the water network using specialist equipment to identify leaks, measure flow and pressure, and escalate issues for repair. Night work and out‑of‑hours work may be required.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Monitor and detect leakage across the water network.
  • Use specialist equipment to measure water flow and pressure in assigned areas.
  • Assist in maintaining District Metered Areas (DMAs), checking integrity and operability.
  • Isolate and re‑commission sections of the network safely, carrying out step testing and zero‑pressure testing with Network Operations teams.
  • Escalate detected leaks promptly to the Team Lead.
  • Support leakage sweeps and surveys carried out by senior team members.
  • Follow regional leakage detection plans and contribute to accurate information sharing.
  • Use handheld devices and adopt new technology as required.
  • Support customer operations with enquiries related to leakage, usage or pressure.
  • Liaise with contractors and internal teams working on water conservation activities.
  • Participate in out‑of‑hours and standby work when required.
  • Promote continuous improvement, efficiency and quality across operations.
  • Maintain strong working relationships across the region.
  • Contribute to process improvements and understanding of systems such as Maximo and LMS.
  • Perform any other duties reasonably requested by the Team Lead.
  • Follow information security policies to protect operational data and systems.

What You Need to Succeed
  • Secondary level education or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 1 year’s relevant experience, ideally in water, utilities or similar sectors.
  • Strong awareness of safety standards and experience working safely in outdoor environments.
  • Ability to work proactively, independently and as part of a team.
  • Good time‑management skills and ability to prioritise.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to collect, review and interpret network information, including GIS/GeoField drawings.
  • Basic understanding of network management.
  • Experience using monitoring/record‑keeping IT tools and handheld devices.
  • Good working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing work structures and requirements.
  • Willingness to learn and apply new knowledge.
  • Full, clean Class B driving licence.
