Electrical Project Engineer – Energy and Industrial - Design and Delivery
Your New Company
Your new company is an award-winning, leading consultancy in Ireland and Europe. For 20 years, they have held an excellent reputation for delivering industry-leading designs and engineering solutions. They have a superb record in the design of sustainable concepts across all sectors of the building industry, with this being assisted by the latest building simulation software.
They are currently hiring for a Senior Electrical Project Engineer with proven experience on energy infrastructure projects, including substations, landing stations, interconnectors and associated facilities.
Your New Role
In your new role as an Electrical Project Engineer, you will support energy infrastructure projects, including substations, landing stations, interconnectors and associated facilities. They are seeking an Electrical Engineer with a strong electrical building services background to lead the design and delivery of electrical systems for these specialist buildings.
The role is focused on the electrical services within energy infrastructure environments, rather than primary HV equipment design. You will take responsibility for delivering robust, compliant and buildable electrical designs for operational buildings located within complex power installations, working closely with HV specialists, clients and multidisciplinary teams.
This role is primarily office-based, with regular site and client interface primarily in Ireland and the UK.
- Lead the electrical building services design for energy infrastructure projects, including control buildings, relay rooms, converter / landing station buildings and ancillary and operational facilities within substation sites.
- Design and specify complete electrical building services systems, including standby and emergency power systems (diesel generators), UPS systems and associated LV and DC distribution, small power and general power distribution, internal and external lighting systems, fire alarm systems and electronic security systems (access control, CCTV, intrusion detection).
- Develop DC power distribution designs for control and protection systems within substations and landing stations.
- Design electrical containment systems, including cable ladder, tray and trunking systems, containment coordination for MV switchgear communication, protection and control cabling, integration of LV, ELV and control cabling within congested plant environments.
- Prepare electrical layouts, schematics, single-line diagrams and technical specifications for building services systems.
- Develop earthing and lightning protection strategies for buildings located within substations and high-risk electrical environments, coordinating with wider site earthing systems.
- Interface closely with HV/MV engineers to ensure building services designs are fully aligned with Substation operational requirements, protection and control philosophies and client and network operator standards.
- Review contractor submissions, technical queries and as-built documentation.
- Support site inspections, installation reviews and commissioning activities as required.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the development of energy infrastructure building services capability within Ethos Engineering.
What You Need to Succeed
Experience & Qualifications
- Honours Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
- Typically, 8+ years’ experience in electrical building services design, ideally within: energy infrastructure / industrial facilities / data centres / mission-critical or utility-adjacent environments.
- Demonstrable experience designing: Generator and UPS systems / LV and MV Protection Schemes / Small power and lighting / Fire alarm and electronic security systems / Electrical containment and coordination in complex plant environments
- Experience with substation, landing station, interconnector or converter station buildings is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with DC systems for control, protection or auxiliary power distribution is an advantage.
- Chartered Engineer status (or working towards) is desirable but not essential.
Technical Skills & Knowledge
- Strong grounding in electrical building services design principles and best practice.
- Understanding of electrical systems within high-risk or operational power environments.
- Knowledge of relevant standards, including: ETCI / IS standards / BS and IEC standards / EN standards / CIBSE guidance (where applicable)
- Proficiency in tools such as: AutoCAD / Amtech / Trimble (or equivalent) / ETAP (desirable) / Dialux / Revit (desirable)
