Computational Design Engineer role with leading specialist building contractor
Your new company
Hays has been retained to recruit a Computational Design Engineer for our client, a construction contractor who specialises in Roofing and Cladding projects based in North Cork.
Your new role
The Computational Design Engineer develops parametric, optimisable façade models (wireframed, solids, shells) using Rhino, Grasshopper, and Revit for all company projects. This role creates intelligent parametric 3D models across three defined stages (LOD 200-250 for quantification, LOD 300-350 for collaboration/ERP integration, LOD 400 for fabrication/BOM export), with general façade design knowledge to support compliance with client specifications, UK Building Regulations, and CWCT standards. The position establish and optimises parametric workflows for efficiency, automation, and seamless handover between design, management, manufacturing, and installation teams.
- Accountable for delivering parametric façade models at specified LOD stages: Stage 1 (LOD 200-250 quantification), Stage 2 (LOD 300-350 client/ERP integration), Stage 3 (LOD 400 fabrication exports).
- Responsible for building and optimising Grasshopper scripts in Rhino for façade geometry generation, panel rationalisation, structural/thermal optimisation, and automation of repetitive design tasks.
- Responsible for integrating Rhino.Inside.Revit or similar workflows to create federated BIM models compatible with client BEPs, clash detection, and company ERP systems for component tracking.
- Responsible for exporting fabrication data including BOMs, STEP files, NC outputs, and schedules that support manufacturing and CNC processes.
- Accountable for model quality, parametric associativity, and data accuracy across stages, ensuring compliance with UK regulations and CWCT performance criteria.
- Responsible for collaborating with Senior Technical Design Engineers, project managers, and fabrication teams to refine models based on feedback and site data.
- Responsible for developing reusable parametric components, scripts, and Revit families for the company library to standardize and scale computational design across projects.
- Understanding of client briefs, architectural geometry, and façade systems & performance specs (e.g. U-values, wind loads, fire ratings).
- UK regulations, CWCT standards, BS/EN codes for model validation.
- Senior level experience working with Rhino, Grasshopper, Revit (with Rhino.Inside) and practical understanding of ERP interfaces for data integration with visual reporting tools (like Speckle, PowerBi)
What you'll need to succeed
Advanced proficiency in Rhino, Grasshopper, and Revit (including Rhino.Inside workflows) for parametric façade modelling.
Strong ability to create multi‑stage parametric models (LOD 200–400) with clear logic, stability, and fabrication-ready outputs.
Experience developing Grasshopper automation workflows for geometry generation, rationalisation, data extraction, and performance optimisation.
3–5+ years’ experience in computational design within façades, architecture, engineering, or construction.
Proven experience delivering models from early quantification through fabrication, including BOM/NC outputs.
Experience working in BIM/ERP-connected environments, including data exchange for scheduling and manufacturing.
Strong understanding of UK Building Regulations relevant to façade design.
Proven knowledge of CWCT standards for performance, testing, and façade compliance.
Working familiarity with BS/EN standards related to cladding, fixings, and fabrication tolerances.
Excellent problem-solving ability, especially converting complex geometry into buildable, rationalised façade systems.
Strong communication skills, able to explain parametric workflows to non-technical team members.
Highly organised approach to model QA, file management, and documentation across multiple project stages.
Proficiency in Python or C# scripting for Grasshopper, enabling advanced automation and custom tools.
Experience using Speckle or Power BI for digital reporting, dashboards, and design-to-ERP visibility.
Portfolio demonstrating complex geometries or fabrication-led parametric workflows used in real façade projects.
What you'll get in return
Excellent salary and package on offer.
Opportunity to work on cutting edge projects using computational design. What you need to do now
