At Hays, we are working with a large API Pharma Manufacturer in Dublin who currently have an opportunity for an experienced Automation Project Manager to lead a multi‑phase Building Management System (BMS) migration program.

This is a delivery focused project management role, accountable for the planning, coordination, cost control and successful execution of automation projects within a regulated GMP environment. While strong automation and OT knowledge is required, hands-on system configuration and programming are delivered by specialist system integrators.
The successful candidate will act as the company’s technical and project owner, ensuring project objectives are met safely, compliantly, on time, and within budget.

The role will work closely with system integrators, site engineering, IT/OT, Quality, and Facilities teams to deliver critical automation upgrades supporting manufacturing and utility systems.

Key Responsibilities
Project & Programme Management

  • Act as project manager and owner for multiple Capital Expenditure (CapEx) automation projects, including a phased BMS migration across several manufacturing and utility buildings.
  • Develop, maintain and control project schedules, budgets, forecasts and cost tracking for all assigned automation projects.
  • Lead vendor and system integrator management, including scope definition, performance monitoring, change control and escalation as required.
  • Coordinate project execution across multiple stakeholders, ensuring alignment between Engineering, IT/OT, Quality, Facilities and external partners.
  • Provide regular project reporting on progress, risks, issues, cost status and resourcing to site and corporate stakeholders.
  • Manage project risks and issues, ensuring appropriate mitigation strategies are implemented.
  • Ensure all project activities adhere to safety, quality and governance standards.
Automation & Technical Oversight
  • Provide technical oversight of automation solutions delivered by system integrators, ensuring alignment with site standards, GMP requirements and operational needs.
  • Review and approve technical and project deliverables, including schedules, cost estimates, design documentation and qualification plans.
  • Act as the site interface for BMS, OT and automation systems, with a focus on HVAC, utilities and building controls.
  • Ensure automation systems comply with GMP, GxP, data integrity and 21 CFR Part 11 requirements.
  • Support the coordination of installation, commissioning and qualification activities (IQ/OQ/PQ).
  • Ensure all changes to live systems are controlled through formal change management processes.

Stakeholder & Site Support
  • Liaise closely with system integrators during design, implementation, testing and handover phases.
  • Work with site IT and OT teams to ensure appropriate infrastructure, cybersecurity and system integration considerations are addressed.
  • Support the site sustaining teams as required during system cutovers, troubleshooting and recovery activities.
  • Facilitate effective communication between technical teams and non-technical stakeholders

Knowledge, Experience & Qualifications
  • Minimum 5+ years’ experience delivering automation or OT projects within regulated life sciences manufacturing (pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device).
  • Proven experience in project management of automation or OT CapEx projects, including budgeting, scheduling and vendor management.
  • Strong understanding of GMP, GxP and FDA regulatory requirements and their application to automated manufacturing and utility systems.
  • Experience managing system integrators and third-party vendors.
  • Working knowledge of PLC, SCADA, PCS and BMS environments sufficient to govern and challenge technical solutions.
  • Experience supporting or coordinating IQ/OQ/PQ and validation activities.
  • Ability to work independently as the sole dedicated project resource on a complex, multiphase programme.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, and decision-making skills.
  • On-site presence in Dublin is required.

Highly Desirable
  • Experience with BMS platforms, particularly Siemens Desigo and/or ABB Cylon.
  • Knowledge of HVAC, utilities and building systems in GMP manufacturing environments.
  • Experience with PCS systems (e.g. PCS7) and OT system integration.
  • Understanding of industrial networking (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, OPC).
  • Knowledge of electrical control systems, including digital, analogue, and ATEX‑rated environments.
  • Familiarity with virtualised environments (e.g. VMware ESXi).
  • Background in API or chemical manufacturing environments
