Assistant Project Curator | 24 Months | National Museum of Ireland Dublin | €39,474

Your new company

As Assistant Project Curator, you will join the National Museum of Ireland (NMI), who are known as Ireland's leading museum institution, with a strong emphasis on Irish history, Irish art, culture, archaeology and natural history.

NMI holds one of the world’s most important and valuable collections of modern and contemporary Irish craft and design. This includes works in ceramics, glass, wood and metals and a range of other materials, as well as design for furniture and furnishings. The Museum also holds a significant and valuable collection of works by the influential designer and architect Eileen Gray, as well as her extensive archive.

Your new office is located in Dublin City (Collins Barracks) and is easily accessible via public transport. NMI requires you to join their team on a 24-month assignment.

Your new role

As Assistant Project Curator, you will support the development, implementation and delivery of strategic projects focusing on the Museum’s craft and design collections, notably its contemporary Irish collections and Eileen Gray collection.

Your duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Support the Museum’s strategic projects in the areas of design and craft.
  • Support digital access projects focused on enhancing access to the Museum’s design collections, including its Eileen Gray collections.
  • Support research and development of Eileen Grey display and engagement projects.
  • Support the Museum’s 20th and 21st Century craft and design research and exhibition projects in general.
  • Liaise effectively with colleagues within the Art and Industry Division, across the Museum and with the professional Irish history and material culture community.
  • Any other such duties as may be assigned from time to time.

What you'll need to succeed

You will have recent relevant experience and a post-graduate qualification in the history of design, art, material or visual culture. Experience working with artefacts in a museum environment and good knowledge and awareness of current trends and developments relating to the post are required. Strong IT skills and experience cataloguing collections are essential. Excellent organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise your workload and meet tight deadlines is necessary.
Desirable experience for this role includes curatorial training or experience; experience cataloguing museum artefacts or archive collections; experience of digital curation; understanding of collections care and security and/or specialism in contemporary Irish design, art or visual culture.
