Electrical & Controls Design Engineer Opportunity for Manufacturing Facility in Cork
Your new company
Hays has been retained to recruit an Electrical & Controls Design Engineer for a leading manufacturing facility in Carrigaline, Cork.
Your new role
Role Overview
We are seeking an Electrical & Controls Design Engineer to support the development of advanced cooling technologies for high-density data centre, AI/HPC and industrial applications. The role is focused on the design and specification of electrical systems, controls architecture, and instrumentation.
You will work closely with mechanical, software and test engineers to define electrical and controls strategies from early concept through prototype development and validation. The position offers exposure to cutting-edge cooling architectures, and the opportunity to influence how new products transition from R&D into scalable, production-ready designs.
- Design electrical architectures for R&D and future production systems: power distribution, control circuits, safety circuits, protective devices, and panel layouts.
- Develop detailed electrical schematics and wiring diagrams using AutoCAD Electrical (or similar).
- Select electrical components including relays, breakers, contactors, VSDs, EC fans, actuators, compressors, and PSU/safety hardware.
- Ensure electrical designs meet CE, and safety standards.
- Support design reviews, risk assessments (FMEA), and generation of technical documentation and BOMs.
- Define and specify instrumentation and sensors across refrigerant, air, and water circuits (temperature, pressure, flow, humidity, differential pressure, level, etc.).
- Develop controls architecture diagrams, I/O lists, and cable schedules in collaboration with software/controls engineers.
- Provide technical input to control logic, sequencing, and system behaviour.
- Evaluate communication protocols and integration methods (analog I/O, digital I/O, Modbus, BACnet, PWM, 0–10 V, etc.).
- Support panel builders and software teams by providing clear I/O maps, signal design notes, and instrumentation specifications.
- Review test data from the R&D lab to verify sensor accuracy and controls behaviour; recommend improvements where required.
What you'll need to succeed
Degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics or related field.
3+ years’ experience in electrical design, controls design, or instrumentation engineering.
Strong ability to design and interpret electrical schematics and control circuits.
Demonstrated experience in selecting and integrating sensors, transducers, and instrumentation.
Understanding of control theory basics
Familiarity with VSDs, EC motors, valves, actuators, relays, digital/analog I/O, and industrial wiring practices.
Ability to work with cross-functional teams (mechanical, software, test).
Strong documentation and communication skills.
Desirable (Not Required)
- Exposure to UL standards: UL1995, UL508A, UL 60335-2-40.
- Experience with HVAC/R, refrigeration systems, or similar thermodynamic systems.
- Hands-on familiarity with instrument calibration or data-acquisition setups.
- Experience with PLC/FBD environments (Carel, WebCTRL, etc.).
- Knowledge of data-centre cooling architectures.
What you'll get in return
Excellent Salary Package
