Responsibilities
The Engineer’s responsibilities extend to the following activities:
General Duties
1.1 To promote and sponsor the efficacy of the company’s quality assurance procedures
1.2 To promote and sponsor the efficacy of the company’s employee policy document
1.3 Assist in the training of colleagues as and when required
1.4 Receive, check log and maintain the storage systems for the incoming drawings issued by other
members of the design team.
Project Pre-Tender Phase
2.1 Maintain the project files at all times in the format required by the QA procedures.
2.2 Assist the project manager/senior engineer to develop the design brief and building services
strategy.
2.3 Co-operate with the senior engineer to establish man-hour budgets for the project and make
every effort to adhere to the targets established.
2.4 In conjunction with the senior engineer, assist in the development of a concept design solution
for the particular application, which embodies the broad philosophies, and standard elemental
design solutions of the company
2.5 Carry out preliminary block load calculations and select plant equipment in sufficient quantity
and detail to establish the critical ‘Rooms, routes and Riser, plantrooms’ requirements of the
services. Tabulate or sketch this information in adequate detail as required by the senior
engineer, for inclusion in the project ‘Concept Report’.
2.6 Assist the senior engineer in the assessment of alternative design concepts, value engineering
studies/options, comparative costing etc., and green issues which includes but not limited to
sustainability and energy efficient solutions.
2.7 Assist in the establishment of accurate and adequate budget costs for the concept scheme.
2.8 In the company of the senior engineer or project manager, attend such design team meetings,
with the client, his architects, structural engineers, quantity surveyors or other such parties as
required
2.9 Assist the senior engineer in the primary service co-ordination in order to establish a protocol for
the installation of service distribution systems that recognise the legitimate needs of the building
structure and the other services and finishes proposed therefor.
2.10 Compile and maintain orderly design files for the project and ensure that such files are
maintained in accordance with the QA procedures
2.11 Undertake the detailed design progress for all services covered by the approved concept
brief/services strategy in accordance with best-established practices and methodologies.
Ensure compliance with the design brief, the approved concept, the approved budget cost plan,
the agreed co-ordination protocols, the company’s Q. A. procedures and the company’s technical
design manual.
2.12 Carry out full technical calculations for the full range of building services installations in a
prescribed and orderly manner and record all design calculation in accordance with the
company’s QA procedures including but not limited to ductwork sizing, fan statics, pipework
sizing and pump statics.
2.13 Create and develop drawings for the various installations in sufficient detail to allow these to be
processed in an efficient manner in strict compliance with the company’s CAD manual.
2.14 Prepare and maintain a single reference drawing issue schedule register for all services drawings
to be prepared and issued to external parties.
2.15 In conjunction with the senior engineer compile technical specifications for the range of services,
using the company’s standard specifications only. The project manager must approve any
departures from these standards.
2.16 Prepare technical data sheets for all items of plant and equipment specified in full and extended
detail using the company’s standard technical data sheets, and ensure that theses Schedules
are included within the tender specifications.
2.17 Undertake site surveys and prepare condition reports or feasibility studies as required.
2.18 Attend to the quality control inspection process on the resulting tender documentation and
undertake amendments identified and recorded during the Inspection.
2.19 Arrange for the filing of the electronic filing of the master tender documents in the project file.
2.19 Assist project manager (Design Stage) in preparation of preliminary health and safety plan
including any safety and design issues.
Project Tender Phase
3.1 Assist the senior engineer in the collation and issue of tender documentation to the selected parties.
3.2 Assist the senior engineer in responding to queries such as request for information from tenderers
during the tender period.
3.3 Assist the senior engineer in the analysis of tenders received and in the evaluation of any
alternative plant or systems proposed by the tenderers to ensure compliance requirements and
suitability with the project.
Project Installation Phase
4.1 Assist the senior engineer in the validation and comment on sub-contractors working drawings,
builders work drawings, fabrication drawings, installation programme and equipment selections
4.2 Represent the company at such on-site contractors and subcontractors progress meetings as
required during the life of the project.
4.3 Accept any revised requirements arising on the project as work proceeds and ensure that all redesign
is diligently carried out in accordance with the QA procedures.
4.4 Monitor the quality of the installations at regular intervals during the installation phase and issue
snag/defect lists to all of the project parties. Monitor rectification of all snag items noted during the site inspections. Note special requirements for BCAR (building control act regulations) on
projects to ensure building services compliance.
4.5 Assist the senior engineer in responding to all ‘Requests for Information’ raised and submitted
by the installation contractors
4.6 Schedule and tabulate all technical commissioning data for the services installations and issue
it to the senior engineer in such a form that is suitable for future issuing.
4.7 Carry out a detailed inspection of the as-installed drawings, operation and maintenance manuals,
commissioning data and reports prepared by the installer and advise the senior engineer of any
departures from the design layouts or approved commissioning requirements
4.8 Prepare snagging lists on all installations and check that such items have been completed the site inspections. Note special requirements for BCAR (building control act regulations) on
projects to ensure building services compliance.
