‘Job for life’ mentality doesn’t exist in modern world

IT is an ever-changing sector, so it stands to reason that those who work within it also seek change. The industry has become synonymous with movement.

Speaking to Siliconrepublic.com, James Milligan, senior business director at Hays Ireland, discussed that movement within a broader context, comparing it to that across all sectors and describing how the concept of a ‘job for life’ has come to an end.

Milligan highlighted changing attitudes to longevity of employment. The possibility of employees staying in one role over a long period of time is actually becoming less desirable, particularly in IT, where fixed-term contracts are the norm.

Keeping employees happy over the period of those contracts is relatively simple, says Milligan. A matter of a fair salary, benefits, career progression and personal development.
